Community-Supported Open Space for an Underserved Neighborhood

Gateway Park North | Seattle, WA

Our team is collaborating with the Georgetown Youth Council (GYC), the Seattle Department of Transportation, the Seattle Parks Department, the Port of Seattle, and various local business and community leaders to advance this park site in Georgetown and further the community’s goals for improving public river access. Located on the north shore of the Duwamish River, the community identifies this landmark site as a top priority for restoration, gathering, performance, and art. Once completed, it will help provide improved access for a community with very limited open green space and public shoreline. We engaged with residents and businesses in the neighborhood with social mixers, design charrettes, presentations, and online outreach to understand their needs and desires for this site. As a result, a series of temporary interventions have been led by the GYC to help increase awareness of Gateway Park North and build support for future development of the 8th Ave. S. corridor.
