An Activity Hub to Encourage Play & Healthy Activities for Kids and Neighbors
Puma Playfield at Concord International Elementary | Seattle, WA
The Puma Playfield Project is working to transform the eastern portion of the Concord International Elementary campus into an activity hub that facilitates and encourages play and healthy activities for the school community and the surrounding neighborhood. Historically low levels of investment in South Park have resulted in limited safe public spaces for kids to play. Inequities are exacerbated by the impacts of diesel emissions from surrounding highways, proximity to the Duwamish Superfund site, waste facilities and industrial development – resulting in a significant negative impact on the community’s health. Improvements to the Concord campus are critical to the needs of this diverse community.
Two years deep into the pandemic, the Concord International and South Park communities are small and under-resourced but have a lot of dedication, heart, and are so enthusiastic about the rethinking of Puma Playfield. Now more than ever as we begin to emerge from a great period of pandemic-fueled isolation, anxiety, and inactivity a fun, useful, functional outdoor space that is instrumental in facilitating and encouraging play, activity, health (mental and physical) and community is of the greatest value to our kids and neighbors.
